I started out wanting to have an r/c car that would come close to 100...what I ended up with is one that is WELL capable of much more than that. I teamed up with Kyosho, RC Monster, Hitec, and CheapBatteryPacks.com to come up with one MONSTER of an electric conversion. The stock vehicle ran very well, great engine compression, handled well...just needed e-power, more speed, and it had to be worthy of the Castle name that would be going on it.
Hitec donated some of their 5645MG servos for the steering and brake/throttle control. More than enough torque, and are super smooth! RC Monster Mike donated a conversion kit for the GT2 that keeps the 2 speed transmission as well as the mechanical brake. The parts are of the HIGHEST quality! He also sent me out THE largest pinion I have EVER seen...at first glance you almost think the pinion is the spur!!! It was rather tedious to install since the gear closest to the motor mount blocked access to the hex head motor mount screws. After removing the center diff, adjusting the motor mount position, and putting it all back in place over and over we FINALLY got it to mesh PEFECTLY!!! CheapBatteryPacks was kind enough to offer up one of the 6s 5300 30C lipos for juice. This pack has TONS of punch, and handles the current VERY well. After a nearly full run the pack was barely warm! Can't wait to try some of their new 5000mah 35C cells in there! My employer, Castle Creations donated our 2200kv Monster Max combo for the project. With a motor based on Steve Neu's 1515/1Y motor (arguably the best motor manufacturer in the world), I knew I could expect some serious power, but was surprised at just how much I got. With the gearing I am running and current it is drawing the motor does need some time to cool down between runs (but it's ok...so do my nerves!). If I can get a handle on all the power the 2200kv system provides I'll be going up to the 2650kv motor with the same battery and gearing. It's currently geared for about 140mph, the 2650 would take it up to about 170mph according to Mike @ RCM. The whole conversion process took approximately 2-3 hours max from start to finish. Very easy to do...especially with the assistance of this vid, and any of you speed demons out there that are looking to break 100mph without spending any more than you would on any other 1/8th scale e-conversion, I STRONGLY suggest you give the Inferno GT2 e-conversion a try. LOTS more work to do on the vehicle to get it more stable at high speed, but I'm confident we'll overcome that soon. Keep your eyes peeled for update videos!!!!!!!!! About 3 hours, but that was with taking pics at every step. If you were doing it without taking pics, and knew what you were doing, it'd be 2hrs or so. The pinion gear mesh was what took a majority of the time. The pinion gear is so large you can't get to the motor mounting screws. The only option is to pull the center diff, pull pinion off, adjust motor on mount, put pinion back on, mount center diff....over and over til it's right (took us about 25-30min...royal PITA to get it meshed properly).

nice to see this project warming up!...i HIGHLY recommend getting a GPS or at LEAST a radar to substantiate the speed claims...lol..after all...this is a huge part of the project.(Plus i REALLY want to see how fast its going) The theoretical speed of 140mph is also very deceiving (My 4-Tec is geared for 217mph..lol) and after taking into consideration friction(aero/drivetrain/gravity) its easy to see why these machines never come close to these speeds....also might want to consider testing in a slightly less populated area...just to set an example...you dont want to do any damage to any of your neighbors property......i have measured distances traveled of over 300 feet after losing control of my car at over 100mph....and im sure this monster weighs considerably more.....you never know whats going to happen!!...Play safe & Good luck with the project!...hope to see some numbers from this thing soon!

Jack...only problem is...there is nowhere here in Kansas to run something like this other than renting out the drag strip in Topeka (about an hour away), and $$$$$$$$$. My street is the flattest, newest laid piece of road ANYWHERE in the area. Wish we had someplace else, but gotta make due with what we've got. My neighbor is a highway patrolman...buddy talked to him and he said he'd gladly radar it for us. Now to wait until we're not getting rained on here in KS and we'll be in business! (stupid rain
) I too am really anxious to see what the radar gun says. I know size deceives the eye...why my little pylon planes look like they're doing 250mph but in reality only doing about 140-150. My bigger pylon planes look like they're standing after flying a little one...even though they're capable of up to 200mph (and that's no BS).

That thing is amazing Joe! I am still working on my OFNA GT that is running a 1515/3d on 12s. I hope to see you at the ISC speed run event in Fontana in November!

Any new info on the speed demon? Looks like a really neat project! I don't have much for smooth roads around here (gravel)... so the top speed machines probably are not in my future. Fast off road is though!

Hey Joe , I am liking your conversion . I have been meesing around with my t-maxx and designed top a-arms and extensions to inplement Losi 1/8 scale offroad shocks . I was haven't finished my set yet but made a set for someone else that never got back to me on test results but did get a new traxxas 2.5 motor out of it . I lost some pieces to my set and someday will get to making them again . Meanwhile I would like to convert my tmaxx to brushless and your parts look very useable as far as the tranny and motor system goes .
Got any tips for a convert on the T-Maxx ? Heres some pics of my a-arms . The lower shock adaptors are the parts I am missing and have to remake . I am currently learning to use SolidWorks to aid me in my designs . Last edited by MikeMcChiken; 12-07-2009 at 03:49 PM. |

ok thanks! But I read that you do not need a 2 speed gearbox with electric.....what do you think?

Correct. You don't need to do 2 speed with electric. You can do a single speed if you choose to. I went the 2 speed route by personal choice...wanted to try something new.
