Default Gearing for 1/8th car

I have just converted my Serpent 960 gas car to electric. I am running a Castle Creations Monster Mamaba with a 2650kv motor. Does anyone have suggested gearing that I can follow? Ran a 45 spur with a 17T pinion, but motor very quickly got very hot and esc fan came on. Thanks

Always start with the largest spur and smallest pinion available for the vehicle that will mesh. Drop timing to lowest for the first runs as well...makes the motor run more efficiently and stays cooler longer. Check motor temps every 3-5 minutes and make sure it's staying below max temp (200F/93C...I use 180F). As long as the motor is going to stay below max temp by the end of the battery pack you can gear up. Either increase a tooth or two on the pinion, or remove 2/3 from the spur, but NEVER both at once. One or the other.

We need to know the make of motor to give any real world suggestions. The kv is important, but the diameter and legth also determine how hard the motor is working. I half in long and half inch diameter motor with a 2650 kv in a 1/8 scale will burn up fast. Electric motors are kind of like horsees in that they will keep trying to turn as long as they have power until they die.

We also need to know the battery configuration. The voltage will also determine how hard the system is working.

I have my 1/8th conversion of a Losi 8ight-T running a Neu 1515/1Y with a Mamba Monster and 5s lipo battery. I am currently geared using the Losi electric conversion spur gear with is 45 tooth and a Monster RC 18 tooth pinion. The truggy exceeds 50 Mph and so far after a run the battery isn't even warm to the touch and the motor was only 86 degrees -- it was about 75 outside last time I ran the car. Keep in mind that the Neu is a very efficient motor so most of the power is getting used. A loss of efficiency means that power is being wasted as either heat or noise -- most likely heat.

I use 2200 Mamba motor running 4S on Serpent 966E 1/8th on road with stock 18 pinion, ESC is cold(fan is not running), motor is only warm.
Timing is 0 degree.
Should I gear up, or increase timing?

You'll gain more speed if you increase your gearing. Watch motor temps though...max is 200F, but I try to stay around the 180F mark.

Im running 60 spur and 14 pinion i think you should go down on your .pinion so your motor wouldnt have to work so much it would cool down.
