Default 1st Time Build - Tamiya Boomerang

Hi All,

Could I ask a bit of advice for a total beginner to RC Building.

Have always wanted a Tamiya RC and combination of Fathers Day, generous wife/kids and stumbling across a deal on Tamiya Boomerang in a shopping centre at the weekend means I can now cross that off the wishlist after about 30 years!

Picked up Tamiya Boomerang kit and controller on Saturday and have been building away. Now got to the stage where it is running, although not yet completed (just shell and a few bits to do but I couldn't resist a quick try). Couple of things I am not sure about:

1. The instructions are not always clear but it seemed to show the receiver being stuck on top of the ESC unit. Is this right? Not sure if the ESC unit will get hot or cause interference so should I move it somewhere else?

2. When I run the car and release power it won't go into reverse until I push the trigger forwards a couple of times. But when reversing if I pull trigger it switched straight to going forwards. Is this right? It makes it hard to stop quickly when going forwards?

Lots of tinkering to be done finishing off now, steering is poor in one direction so need to adjust the rods a bit I think. I also saw some talk about getting bearings? I have used the ones that came with the car but is that a mistake. There were a mixture of metal and plastic so used metal ones in gearboxes but have had to use the plastic ones in wheels. Should I be replacing those with metal.

Any other top tips, just cheap ones for now. No plans to change much from stock, e.g. Motor as it is fine to use and I will enjoy playing with set up - for now!

Many thanks for any replies - really appreciate any help

1. No Need to move it. ESCs tend to get hot. Must come with built in heat sink or a fan. No Worries.

2. When you release the throttle and quickly push the trigger foward, what it does it acts as a "hand brake / E-brake" some models do it some dont, depending on the programming of the ESC. Most, if not all Tamiya have that programmed in. Pushing the trigger foward a second time will put your car in reverse. Pulling on the trigger will make it go foward yes. All of this is normal.

Metal bearing, plastic one are fine. Most people will tell you to replace for metal one for so that your gear and wheel move a better in term of it being more loose. less stress on your belt/shaft/motor

Hense Toys for adults... so much programing into these tiny devils.
