Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself a little bit. I am the Associate Online Editor at Air Age Media, we put out a number of magazines including RC Car Action, Model Airplane News, Backyard Flyer, DieCast X and Flight Journal. I work primarily for RC Car Action but also dabble in airplanes and Die Cast as well. If you have any questions for me please feel free to post up, or any suggestions/comments are always welcome too. I will be online here multiple times during the week to chat and see whats going on in RC, as well as to answer any questions.

Thanks,

Glad to have you amongst us Brandon. Once these forums gain more popularity, as they inevitably shall, it will be nice to have an "industry" representative such as yourself here to share with the masses.

Hi Brandon,
I'm Jay Patigas from QRCRG (see Individual Racing Clubs thread). I'm a fan of your RC Action Magazine but i'm just wondering why it's not available here in Qatar, BTW all your other magazine are sold here except the RC Car Action. Maybe you can do something to make it available here in the Middle East, Qatar particularly. Thanks for being with us and among us.

Thanks everyone. Jay I will find out if we can distribute to the Middle East. I do know that you can buy the digital edition or Members Only membership and have full access to the issue online plus a bunch of additional features. These can be purchased at http://www.rcstore.com and you can login to the digital edition and Members Only section at http://www.rccaraction.com

Hope this helps for now.

Brandon

My burning question: Why do the car magazines keep referring to brushless motors as maturing technology? In the RC plane/helicopter world brushless has been used for well over a decade. I have some Aveox motors that are roughly ten years old and Aveox stopped making RC products and went back to producing motors for Boeing and the like. I am also curious why brushless is talked about like it is some holy grail of power that we never had before when any rare earth magnet based motor, such as the old Astro Cobalt motors that used to be made for cars, will give the same power.

There are motors will will make the same power, but brushless motors require little to zero maintenance. They will virtually last forever, as there are no parts touching like the brushes on a standard motor. Yes, brushless motors have been around for a while, but they are improving in power, efficiency, and are becoming extremely cheap for the consumer which is a great thing.

Brandon,

What i have observed over the years is that we have an influx of cheap motors that will get the job done, but lack the efficiency of the top notch motors. In the past, all brushless motors manufactured were hand wound, top quality, and huge efficiency. Of course, the big reason they were so powerful is that no one would pay the expense of brushelss if they weren't much more powerful than a standard Graupner Speed 500 can motor with ferrite magnets so all the brushless motors were made with rare earth magnets to give that nice power gain. Cheap outrunners have also made burshless much more mainstream, but I have never seen an outrunner used in a car.

Brushless efficiency has always been in the 85% or better category from the top manufacturers. An interesting point made by Astro Bob in "The Electric Motor Handbook" is that a brushed ESC is inherently more effcient than a brushless because at full throttle a brushed ESC is just an open circuit while a brushless ESC has to run the current through the FETs to commute the motor regardless of throttle setting. in theory, and maybe even in practice, a top quality bruhsed rare earth motor is more effecient than a top quality brushless. What has really revolutionized the use of brushless motors, in my opinion, is the improvement in battery technology. When I first got into RC cars at top of the line matched 6 cell pack was a 1200 mAh nicad. Today, some people are running 8000 mAh lipo allowing them to pull much higher current and really take advantage of what these brushless motors can do.

One final detail that often gets forgotten about brushless is that as well as being virtually maintenance free, they do not generate electrical noise the way brushed motors do. No sparking at all actually. One of the former great RC motor manufacturers, Aveox, stopped making RC motors but still make brushless motors for medical equipment and Boeing Aircraft because of the lack of noise and sparking. You really wouldn't want electrical arcing in an oxygen rich environment...

Sorry if I got way off topic.

Hi Brandon, Great Mag! I was wondering why my photo submissions to readersrides@airage.com always get bounced back? Do you have another email to submit to? I've tried many times in the last few years with no success.
Always comes back as a bad address.

Thanks man!
