programming RC signals

Hi, I'm a computer engineering student. I'm doing a project with the need to "direct" an RC car.

I was just wondering if anyone has heard of , or has done any programming/development with the Controller of the RC cars.

Where can I find information about what kind of signals are sent for transmission.
